TMNT 2 Review: Ninja Turtles in 3D Worth Shelling Out For – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is a Fun Ride if You Can be a Kid for 2 Hours
The first 15 minutes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows will satisfy those who “shelled” out extra for the 3D or (even better) the IMAX 3D showings. Whether you are a TMNT fan or not, the action sequences are exciting and fun for all ages. While it is always difficult for a film to live up to such a beloved franchise, Director Dave Green delivers a a much-improved sequel to the 2014 reboot, with more laughs, more spectacular visuals, and more colorful characters than ever before. While Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War has all the essential elements to a true blockbuster film, it may be over the heads of 5-9 year olds. TMNT: Out of the Shadows fills this void, not only making it a great option for kids and teenagers, but also proving some mindless entertainment for parents as well.
TMNT 2 Review:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows Plot
Though coming in slightly longer than we would’ve preferred, the film has plot that is thankfully simple. In a nut”shell,” Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael battle bigger, badder villains, alongside April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vern Fenwick (Will Arnett), and a newcomer: the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell). After supervillain Shredder (Brian Tee) escapes custody, he joins forces with mad scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and two dimwitted henchmen, Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (WWE Superstar Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly), to unleash a diabolical plan to take over the world. As the Turtles prepare to take on Shredder and his new crew, they find themselves facing an even greater evil with similar intentions: the notorious Krang.
TMNT 2 Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows Highlights
One of the highlights of TMNT: Out of the Shadows is the introduction of Shredder’s mutant henchmen, Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly). Whether you see them before they turn into their larger-than-life monsters or after they become a huge rhino and a warthog, their appearance, behavior, and comedic timing will keep audiences smiling. Honorable Comedic Mention also goes to Will Arnett, who you can always count on for good laughs and he comes through perfectly in his scenes. We weren’t too impressed with Stephen Amell’s Casey Jones or Tyler Perry’s Baxter Stockman, but that may have had more to do with the way their characters were written. While female viewers will have their issues with the presentation of Megan Fox’s April O’Neil, most guys will be caught ogling at her in a Hit-Me-Baby-One-More Time-esque scene early on. This film definitely could have used a little more Megan Fox.
TMNT 2 Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows – Final Words
What we liked: Amazing 3D effects, Solid Action Sequences, Simple story, Celebrity Cameos, Bebop and Rocksteady bring the laughs and steal the show
What we didn’t like so much: A little long at 112 minutes, Not enough Megan Fox, Stephen Amell, Laura Linney & Tyler Perry Nothing Special
This is one of those films you have to go into with low expectations. Turn off your plot-hole finder, put your brain in the drawer, and put away your TMNT bible. Put on your 3D glasses, treat your eyes to a feast, and be happy with some of the laughs that come your way. It’s not the best action film this summer. You won’t see the best performances here either. The film leaves a lot on the table for both fans of the franchise, fans of Megan Fox, and general moviegoers. But if you ask the kids. The millions of kids out there. Most will tell you it was a fun ride.
