Zoe Lister-Jones on her BAND AID film, Bed Bath & Beyond – Watch the LIFE IN PIECES Star on Relationships, Directing New Film with Adam Pally, Fred Armisen

Zoe Lister-Jones Band-Aid Movie 2017 Interview San Francisco Bay Area HQ

Zoe Lister-Jones talked to Bay Area HQ  (video above) this week about San Francisco, relationships, Uber, Bed Bath & Beyond, and her directorial debut, BAND AID, (IFC Films) the refreshingly raw, real, and hilarious story of a couple, Anna (Zoe Lister-Jones) and Ben (Adam Pally), who can’t stop fighting. Advised by their therapist to try and work through their grief unconventionally, they are reminded of their shared love of music. In a last-ditch effort to save their marriage, they decide to turn all their fights into song, and with the help of their neighbor Dave (Fred Armisen), they start a band. A story of love, loss, and rock and roll, BAND AID is a witty and perceptive view of modern love, with some seriously catchy pop hooks to boot.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT FROM ZOE LISTER-JONES

I began writing Band Aid first and foremost because I was interested in exploring gender dynamics within a long term relationship. There seemed to be consistencies in the battles waged behind closed doors among my married friends. Many were chronic, and almost all were banalities rooted in something much deeper. There was freedom in learning that the squabbles that sometimes defined a marriage were not individualistic. In my discussions, I began to think, perhaps there was a code waiting to be cracked; or at the very least, an opportunity to quantify our differences as a means to bridge them.

Having written lyrics for songs since I was a teenager and then writing lyrics for the all original soundtrack to Breaking Upwards, music was something I was habitually drawn to, and had, as of late, felt was missing in my life. The idea of exploring a couple’s domestic strife through song immediately compelled me, and thus, Band Aid was born.

I decided to make the protagonists, Anna and Ben, artists because I was equally interested in the story of failed artists learning to make art precisely out of that sense of failure, both individual and shared. How couples overcome loss, in all of its many forms, was a thread that I wanted to unravel, interweaving the personal with the professional and all of the indecipherable mess that lies in between.

Tonally, I set out with a question: what would it look like if Cassavetes made a comedy? Could one achieve the raw immediacy, the nuanced unpredictability, through a comedic lens? My favorite comedies were able to weave seamlessly between moments of elation and anguish. I strove to achieve that elasticity, through dialogue, my incredible cast and my fearless crew, made up entirely of women.

Hiring an  all-female production crew was deliberate-  I wanted to give opportunities to women in departments that they otherwise may not be given. I also felt that women in a collective might engender a different sense of confidence, and a uniquely collaborative energy, within the creative process.

I began by collaborating with my producer, Natalia Anderson. Our first hire was cinematographer Hillary Spera, whose work I admired and in whom I immediately found a kindred spirit. I was interested in shooting entirely handheld, to emphasize the intimacy of the narrative, ultimately creating a dynamic in which the camera at times felt voyeuristic. Hillary’s shooting style was a perfect fit. We decided to shoot two cameras, to further be able to capture intimacy on its rawest level, on the Arri Amira, with Cooke vintage lenses.

I was lucky enough to find two actors, both deeply funny and funnily deep, who happened to know how to play instruments. Adam Pally played guitar in high school bands, and Fred Armisen was a professional drummer in a punk band for many years before he came to his SNL fame. This was essential, because I insisted we play all of the music in the film live. I had seen too many movies in which live performances were clearly pre-recorded and, to me, it sacrificed authenticity. I wanted the audience to see and hear our imperfections, to feel the electricity of live performance captured on screen.

We shot entirely in Los Angeles, which, though raised in Brooklyn, I now call home. Band Aid is a film about a home, and what it takes to cultivate that sacred and often fragile space. It’s a film about art, and love, and rock and roll. And how we find light amidst the dark.

Additional Darko films include:  JIMI: ALL IS BY MY SIDE, written and directed by John Ridley and starring André Benjamin as Jimi Hendrix in an intimate story of how Jimmy James became the music legend, which premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival; HELL BABY, the co-directorial debut of actors/screenwriters Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, starring Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb as an expectant couple who move into the most haunted house in New Orleans and must call upon the services of the Vatican’s elite exorcism team to save them from their demonic baby, which had its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival; and writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait’s critically acclaimed films GOD BLESS AMERICA, starring Joel Murray, and WORLD’S GREATEST DAD, starring Robin Williams.

In 2016, Hamm and McKittrick along with Movie Package Company’s Ray Mansfield and Shaun Redick formed QC Entertainment, a partnership which finances and produces director driven films.   A one-stop solution entertainment finance and production company, QC develops, produces on-set, finances productions, handles sales and distribution, and everything in between.

In addition to BAND AID, upcoming QC projects include:  the upcoming GET OUT, the feature directorial debut of Jordan Peele based on his own original script in a socio-political-horror-thriller starring Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Daniel Kaluuya, and Caleb Landry Jones, which QC developed and produces alongside Blumhouse Productions; producing and financing the true crime thriller GREEN RIVER KILLER, which marks the feature film directorial debut of acclaimed actor Michael Sheen who will also star in the film based on his script adapted from the award winning graphic novel; and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES, written and directed by Burr Steers, a fresh twist on Jane Austin’s classic release by Screen Gems last year.

In addition to his busy feature film slate, Hamm currently is a board member on several corporations including Northern Homelands, Mackay Envelope, Acoma Oil, Northern Star Foundation, The Hersey Foundation, The Hamm Clinic and Maxum Insurance where he serves as Vice President.  He is a graduate of Brown University.

SHAUN REDICK (Executive Producer)

With almost two decades as one of the industry’s leading motion picture packagers, Executive Producer Shaun Redick has successfully solidified himself amongst a limited number of experts in the field of feature film packaging, financing, production and worldwide distribution.

In 2009, he and industry veteran Ray Mansfield formed Movie Package Company, LLC, combining their years of professional, entertainment industry experience and executive deal-making in all components of the filmmaking process from creative conception and development to packaging, financing, production and worldwide distribution.

Before formulating MPC, Redick’s extensive level of knowledge and relationships began as a literary and international feature agent working for more than a decade with top writers, directors, stars, producers, financiers and distributors while at two of the industry’s leading talent agencies: International Creative Management (ICM), reporting to former CEO Jeff Berg; and William Morris, working directly with former head of WMA Independent, Cassian Elwes.

In 2015, MPC released multiple Independent Spirit Award nominee KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER, co-produced with Academy-Award® winner Alexander Payne and starring Academy-Award® nominee Rinko Kikuchi.  Other MPC releases include:  AND SO IT GOES, a romantic comedy directed by Rob Reiner and starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton; LA BARE, a documentary directed by Joe Manganiello about the history, lives and culture of the world’s most popular male strip club, La Bare Dallas; highbrow horror thriller NOTHING LEFT TO FEAR, produced with, and featuring original music by, iconic rock star guitarist Slash; and IN THE BLOOD, directed by John Stockwell and starring MMA fighter/action star Gina Carano along with an ensemble cast of Danny Trejo, Stephan Lang, and Luis Guzman.  Additional recent credits include multiple Academy-Award® nominee, THE MESSENGER, starring Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, Steve Buscemi and Samantha Morton; and POWDER BLUE, starring Forrest Whitaker, Jessica Biel, Eddie Redmayne, Patrick Swayze and Ray Liotta.

Before starting MPC, Redick was integrally involved in more than 100 movies, including:  13, starring Evan Rachel Wood and Holly Hunter; THE COOLER, starring Alec Baldwin and William H. Macy, which garnered an Academy-Award® nomination for Baldwin; RUNNING SCARED, starring Paul Walker; MGM’s THE FLOCK, starring Richard Gere and Claire Danes; THE UPSIDE OF ANGER, starring Joan Allen and Kevin Costner; UNKNOWN, starring Jim Caviezal, Barry Pepper and Greg Kinnear; and PENELOPE, starring Reese Witherspoon and Christina Ricci.

In 2016, MPC’s Redick and Mansfield along with Darko Entertainment’s Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm formed QC Entertainment, a partnership which finances and produces director driven films.   A one-stop solution entertainment finance and production company, QC develops, produces on-set, finances productions, handles sales and distribution, and everything in between.

In addition to BAND AID, QC’s busy slate of projects include:  the upcoming GET OUT, the feature directorial debut of Jordan Peele based on his own original script in a socio-political-horror-thriller starring Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Daniel Kaluuya, and Caleb Landry Jones, which QC developed and produces alongside Blumhouse Productions; producing and financing the true crime thriller GREEN RIVER KILLER, which marks the feature film directorial debut of acclaimed actor Michael Sheen who will also star in the film based on his script adapted from the award winning graphic novel; and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES, written and directed by Burr Steers, a fresh twist on Jane Austin’s classic release by Screen Gems last year.
