Eat Drink SF 2016 – Your Ultimate Festival Guide – San Francisco’s Premier Annual Food, Wine, Spirits Event Can Be Overwhelming, So Let’s Break it Down
Indulge. Celebrate. Feast, If you haven’t been to Eat Drink SF, you’ve probably heard about how amazing it is. While the festival kicks off on Thursday night, August 26th, for “Taco Knockdown,” Eat Drink SF’s Grand Tasting Sessions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the ultimate indulgence and you and your friends deserve it. For less than the price of a dinner at one of the five-star restaurants featured onsite, you can drink and feast on some of the most unique and creative offerings you’ve ever seen. Virtually any chef or mixologist who is on the culinary map in the Bay Area will be there. After selling out all of the Grand Tastings last year, planners have added a fourth Grand Tasting into the weekend program. They’re limiting the number of tickets to control lines and bringing in more restaurants and plan to improve the event in every way this year. Events run Thursday 8/26 – Sunday 8/29.
You’ll experience delicious flavors and one of a kind experiences enjoyed under one roof, at the ever-popular Fort Mason, on San Francisco Bay’s waterfront. Delicious dishes from more than 36 restaurants with exclusive offerings for VIPs, drinks from over 70 beer, wine, and spirits makers, demonstrations on the main stage and cooking demonstrations on the food stage, expert lead beverage classes, all set to the perfect soundtrack. Eat Drink SF’s Grand Tastings are a food lover’s paradise. Your ticket gets you in the door and no wallet is needed inside. Watch renown chefs & bartenders do demonstrations on the main stage. Learn about wine in the San Francisco Wine School Beverage Classroom. Play lawn games & hang out in Backyard Bites presented by Super Duper Burgers. And meet the chefs and personalities that make the Bay Area a world-class dining destination. Must be 21+ for all events.
Eat Drink SF, (aka SF Chefs), was founded by the Golden Gate Restaurant Association in 2009 to celebrate the Bay Area’s world-class restaurant community. Each year, more than 160 restaurants participate in Eat Drink SF’s events that include Taco Knockdown and its signature Grand Tasting sessions. With more than 8,500 attendees, Eat Drink SF provides an opportunity for top area chefs to connect directly with enthusiastic food lovers.
This year, Eat Drink SF has added a special Grand Tasting on Sunday, August 28, to celebrate the Golden Gate Restaurant Association’s 80th anniversary and honor the legacy restaurants that have helped shape the distinct flavor of the local culinary experience in the Bay Area. Recently the festival has announced a closing ceremony with the Golden State Warrior’s drumline, Aftershock, and the GLIDE Ensemble and the Change Band at the Sunday Afternoon Grand Tasting on August 28. The Sunday Afternoon Grand Tasting will feature Bay Area bars and restaurants that have been open for at least 20 years including Alfred’s Steakhouse, Scala’s Bistro, Sutro’s at the Cliff House and Tosca Café. Legacy restaurants will be highlighted throughout the Festival Pavilion alongside younger San Francisco staples, such as Town Hall and Blue Plate, as well as newcomers to the Bay Area dining scene like Buffalo Theory. Throughout the weekend, August 26-28, San Francisco’s Buena Vista Café will be serving their famous Irish Coffees featuring Tullamore D.E.W. to bring guests a quintessential flavor of San Francisco.
Finally, the Main Stage will feature action-packed programming, such as “History of the Tiki Drink” by Martin Cate of Smuggler’s Cove and a culinary demonstration with Thomas McNaughton of flour + water and Ryan Pollnow of Aaxte, presented by All-Clad.
VIP EXPERIENCE: For an even more highly-curated experience, VIP ticket holders will enjoy early entry (45 minutes prior), access to a special area within the festival to relax (with additional seating and private restrooms), and a selection of exclusive food and beverage offerings. This is in addition to the complete signature Grand Tasting experience with bites from 35 top Bay Area restaurants, unlimited pours of beer, wine, and spirits, chef demonstrations on the main stage, wine lessons in the SF Wine School classroom, lawn games in the Backyard Bites area, and the opportunity to meet and mingle with the Bay Area’s best chefs and tastemakers.
Here’s our guide, and don’t forget to visit the official site for the most current and correct details, including any last minute schedule and talent changes.

The taco submissions are in! Eat Drink SF kicks off this year with the return of Taco Knockdown. A dozen chefs will compete in a creative battle for the “taco” title. (Yes, “taco”. Think foldable food inspired by the legacy of the taco.) The competition will be fierce and the tacos inspired. Guests will try and judge all competing tacos and all competing margaritas in this year’s brand new Milagro Margarita Mix Off. A panel of expert judges will vote for the Best Overall winner (last year it was Trick Dog’s birria de achivo taco) and guests will cast their vote for the People’s Choice winner (DOSA’s spicy duck vindaloo taco took home the prize in 2015). Everything is included in the price of your ticket.
This year’s competition will be hot, as Dosa and Trick Dog look to defend their titles. Here’s the lineup of restaurants and their unique tacos that will be bringing the flavor to Eat Drink SF’s Taco Knockdown 2016:
AQ – Pork Rib Taco
Bar San Pancho – Dorados al Charro Taco
Delfina – Pork Belly Taco
Dosa – Grilled Prawn Uttapam Taco
La Urbana – Tri-tip Steak Tatemado Taco
Matador – Duck Confit Mole Taco
Mr. Tipple’s Recording Studio – Not so Chocotaco (Dessert)
Myriad Gastropub – Oxtail Taco
Palm House – Hawaiian Smoked Brisket in Wonton Taco
Picco – Achoyte Verdi Braised Pork Cheek Taco
Souvla – Double-Stuff Taco with Lamb Mole
Trick Dog – Agua Chile Shrimp Taco
There will be a new panel of expert judges and you’ll be there to weigh in on some serious taco action. Brand new for this year is the Milagro Margarita Mix Off, with local bartenders competing with their creative takes on the margarita.
Competing in this year’s Milagro Margarita Mix Off:
Brandon Bigalke (Wingtip)
Brian Nelson (WhiteChapel)
Ted Ronnie (Mosto)
Oz Serafin (Trick Dog)
Guests can try (and vote for!) all competing tacos and margaritas, enjoy the chip and guacamole bar, drink wine beer and cocktails featuring Leyenda del Milagro Tequila, Menjurje de Ancho Reyes Ancho Chile Liqueur, Montelobos Mezcal, and Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur. Wineries include 1,000 Stories, Bonterra Organic Vineyards, Chateau D’Esclans, Meiomi, and Prisoner Wine Company!
Everything is included in the price of your ticket!
Emcee Joel Riddell (Dining Around) and DJ Magic Matt (iHeartMedia) will keep the party vibes going all night long! Taco Knockdown judges include Carolyn Alburger of Eater, Diane Andrews of Fine Cooking, Luis Flores of Uno Dos Tacos, Margo True of Sunset Magazine, and Daniel Schneeweiss of Milagro
Enjoy great tunes and a great party. The perfect warm-up to a weekend of Grand Tastings. Check out the gallery from last year’s event to get a taste of what you have to look forward to at Taco Knockdown.
